Using Place as Inspiration

I’ve composed a lot of electronic music under the Anderhill name in the past few years. Experimental, ambient, and drone are the three genres I focus on the most. How do I find inspiration? Good question. There are several methods.

Music can be inspired by people, situations, emotions, or events. I’ve created many works by focusing on a specific instrument, tempo, or sound. But one of my favorite methods of finding inspiration for composing music is place. My album Musical Sketches from Discovery Bay is a perfect example.

For this album I specifically went to Discovery Bay near Port Townsend Washington. I spent several days and nights in a cabin overlooking the bay with the intent of composing music that captured the spirit of the place.

Some of my other works like I Am Mostly Ocean and The Beauty of Infinite Sadness are also written with places in mind. I love creating music that captures the feeling I get when I look out at the ocean, walk through the woods, or stare across the open plains.

Next time you need a little inspiration consider using a place as your focus. – dse
