Pith

According to Merriam-Webster, one of the definitions of pith is the essential part or the core of something. Pith is substantial quality of meaning. Pith is important.

I’ve reached a point as an artist where pith is an important tool for me. Whether it’s a story, a poem, or a song, to be able to peel the surface back and get to the pith of the subject is my goal and desire.

That doesn’t mean I’ll never use rhetorical devices like embellishment, elaboration, or outright lies again. Those are all tools kept in the writer’s toolbox, and sometimes a good piece of writing may require their use. But pith might be the most important tool in the garage.

To be able to say something using three words that makes your audience stop and pay attention is much better than saying the same thing using three paragraphs and putting your audience to sleep.
