I don’t want to come off as harsh, but if you ask too much of me, I’ll likely just say no. Let me repeat that. No. It’s a word we often forget to use. No. We should say no more often.

One reason I’m able to be as creatively productive as I am is simple. I say no to other things. Too often we feel obliged to keep doing more when we’re asked, as if everything others expect of us is validated. Actually, people can be funny. They can suck your time and energy without always realizing it. It’s your job to say no.

It’s not just people. We can say no to activities as well. I haven’t watched five minutes of TV in six weeks. I say no to video games. And although I enjoy social events, if they take up too much of my time, the answer is no.

Oh, and no requires no explanation. If you’re a parent you might understand this. Sometimes no is just no because I said so. – dse
