Diversity of Ideas

I grow weary of those who think we should all have one religion and one political preference in America. That’s a recipe for disaster. Personally, as I believe any honest artist should, I support a diversity of ideas.

Without the ability to seek and find a diversity of ideas in America, art would suffer greatly. It would only be a matter of time before art would be banned for being too political or anti-religious.

Growing up, I was raised with strict Christian-based beliefs. I was taught that certain types of music were not only unGodly, but were absolute evil. It was drilled into my head. I was told that if I listened to certain musicians I would go to hell. Crazy. Later in life, I discovered some of those same musicians were actually religious people themselves. Oh, the irony.

The fear from my upbringing stayed with me long into adulthood. But in the past few years, I’ve found myself composing dark ambient music that can sometimes sound like it comes straight out of Dante’s hell. It’s not evil. It’s art.

Without a diversity of ideas, art would become dull and boring. Willingness to accept and embrace a variety of possibilities and viewpoints helps us to develop a greater variety of artistic ideas and expression. – dse
