Atrophy & Alchemy

Abstract – Photo by Dan Steven Erickson

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like everything is coming unraveled. It seems as though the world just keeps falling apart. Our social and political systems seem to be in constant turmoil. The physical world slowly decays. Atrophy is everywhere.

Recently, I was contemplating these thoughts of atrophy one morning when I had to acknowledge that there is a simultaneous sense of everything coming together. As a creative person I have periods when it feels like I’m magic. I can blend a variety of elements to come up with something that never existed. It’s a form a alchemy.

I’m currently remodeling and redecorating my condo. While I was considering the atrophy of certain things in life I looked around and saw the alchemy of progress in my physical work.

I don’t think we can have one without the other. Yes, things are constantly falling apart. Much of my Anderhill music represents that kind of decay. But that music itself was created by bringing things together. And so both atrophy and alchemy remain important parts of the creative process and life itself. – dse
