Non is the most experimental track I’ve composed to this point. The longer I experiment with digital electronic music, the closer it gets to being noise, a form of art in itself. And yes, noise is also a musical genre. This experiment tends to be more gentle, subtle noise with some musical qualities.
On this piece, I started with a drone composition with a balanced combination of harmony and discordance. Next, I saturated it with huge amounts of reverb and delay. Finally, I went over the top with digital effects.
The result is something haunting, beautiful, jarring, and meditative all at once. But is it music or non-music. I’m calling it Non. I’ll let the listener decide. The photo is tide pools on the beach in Ogunquit Maine. – dse
