Official Welcome to the Dan Steven Erickson YouTube Channel

I actually announced and started my new YouTube Channel last week. This is an official welcome. Why another post about the start of the channel? My first video was a short.

Shorts aren’t good for anybody. They’re not good for you because they lower your attention span. They’re not good for anybody’s YouTube Channel, so I’ve read.

So let’s start over.

First, why am I starting a YouTube Channel?

Primarily, to catalog hundreds of songs that I’ve written in the last 40+ years. Is that all this channel will be? Maybe. Maybe not. Only time will tell if this format will feel right for me to develop the channel into something more.

I might do posts about the process of songwriting. Maybe I’ll get into how I compose electronic music. Other topics such as poetry, books, and life itself might be discussed. But for now I’m just cataloging songs.

Why am I doing this now?

Why not?

I toyed around with starting a channel back when I had my blog about minimalism. I did a couple posts and quit. I was too concerned with perfection. I was also questioning the whole promoting-and-selling minimalism thing. It seems a bit ironic.

I’ve talked about starting this songwriting channel for several years. It’s true about that first step. Now that I’ve taken that step, I’m moving forward with it. I don’t really care if I get many followers. I’m doing this for my own reasons. I’ve discovered that it only takes about 20 minutes a day.

My lack of technology and experience.

My biggest excuse for not starting a channel sooner has always been that I don’t have the right tools and experience. That’s true. But it’s not a good reason to not get started.

That said, I’m starting out with minimal equipment. All I’m doing right now is using my iPhone for both video and audio. I have a cheap desktop tripod. That’s all. And although I teach public speaking, I’ve never really taken the time to develop my own style of speaking outside of teaching.

This will be a journey. It might just stay simple: a place to catalog songs using minimal technology. But I’ll probably make some technical improvements to my studio and develop a unique style of delivery with time. I’ll also develop my studio space to be a little more interesting.

What’s to come?

I’ve written 36 songs in the past couple of months. That’s the first project. I’ve posted seven songs to the new channel in the past week. I’ll continue to post the new songs, including a mandolin series. Once all the new songs are posted, I’ll move to the back catalog.

I’ll likely publish 5-7 videos per week for the next month. When I get to the back catalog, I’ll likely slow down a little.
