Repetition

Sometimes, it feels like an inescapable loop, this repetition. Recently, I’ve posted about Failure, and the Power of 10,000, both strong arguments for doing the same thing over and over until you reach something close to perfection. But repetition can be a two-edged sword.

When I started this site last summer, I told myself that it was going to be something different than my previous websites. I’m not so sure it is. It seems I’m doing the same thing, writing articles that seem to repeat themselves. Perhaps, that’s the nature of this beast we call writing. The repetition can feel laborious and vain.

On the flip side, this new website is different. I’ve stood up for my artistic and ethical values by staying clear of stock photography, meaningless links, and a variety of annoying gimmicks many online writers incorporate.

Although, I’ve wound up posting many essays, I’ve stuck to the brevity in writing that I believe my audience can appreciate. And even though I’ve borrowed many pieces of writing from my archive, I’ve edited those pieces to fit the new look and feel of the site. There is something new here.

Yes, repetition can be exasperating at times. As a writer, I wish I could have something novel, profound, and enlightening to say every day. It doesn’t quite work like that. Repetition might get old at times, but it also leads to higher levels of skill and creative thought. – dse
