Nonsense

Abstract – Photo by Dan Steven Erickson

The danger of civilization, of course, is that you will piss away your life on nonsense. – Jim Harrison

Do you ever ask yourself, “what the hell am I doing?” Do you wonder if your life and all the energy you put into your art is just nonsense and a waste of time?

I love being a creator. But those questions run through my head often. Will I regret all the time I’d put into being creative when I’m on my deathbed? I can’t answer that question, but I do know that my work is often its own reward.

Drone music and noise music might feel like nonsense to some. Yet for me, the music I create can help me to find peace and meditation. You might think writing pithy little blurb posts is a waste of time. But it beats getting drunk every night. And perhaps somebody actually reads this stuff and gets something from it.

Note that the famous poet, Jim Harrison says, “the danger of civilization,” not the danger of creativity. Culture and so-called civilization often feel to me the enemy of creativity. I think this may be especially true when it comes to pop culture. Perhaps, that’s why I tend to buck the commercial world and practice the less commercial arts.

Over the years it’s been observed by this creator that modern entertainment, TV, pop music, video games, etc., is a waste of one’s time. You could easily piss away your life on that kind of nonsense. At least as creators we’re making something rather than just consuming. – dse
