Do you ever get stuck when you’re trying to write something? So do I. But I don’t believe in writer’s block. The term suggests that we can’t write at all because there is some kind of barricade in front of us. I call BS.
I have times when I get temporarily stuck on something I’m writing. I look at this problem more like a “detour” than a block. I have some simple ways of getting past the detour and back to writing.
- A short break
- Exercise: walking is my favorite
- Do something fun
But here’s my biggest secret weapon. Practice another form of creative writing or even another art form. It’s simple. If I get stuck on song lyrics I go out and do some photography. If I get stuck on the chapter of a book I might write a few poems. Anything to keep creativity flowing.
Next time you feel stuck, don’t give up. Don’t call it writer’s block. That suggests that there’s no way around it. Instead, take a detour. Do something else. It’s been my experience that it won’t be long before you feel the creativity to return to your original project. – dse
