We all experience darkness in our lives, but darkness can teach us to seek the light. Sometimes, our most creative works stem from darkness. If we are able to reach into those dark places and relive the past, we are one step closer to the light. It’s not always easy to do.
When I was child, I was the victim of an abusive cult and I experienced some horrific things:
- subjected to poor living conditions
- lived away from my parents
- worked up to 14 hours a day
- received regular beatings
When I was 16, I was incremental in helping to break up the cult. That’s another story.
When I became an adult, I began to write about my experiences. It was a long slow process. It took me nearly 35 years to reach the point where I could truly find the emotional strength to create a published work about my childhood.
Writing about the darkness of our past can help us to deal with unresolved feelings. It can help us to move on. It can help us to offer forgiveness to those who hurt us. We can move from darkness to light. – dse
