Sabbatical Update #4

Selfie – Dan Steven Erickson

This is my fourth and final update on the process of my sabbatical project.

I’m happy to report that the project is almost complete. I’m working into the final chapters of the rewrite of A Train Called Forgiveness. I’ll write a short paper about the process for the Board of Directors at Yakima Valley College. I’ll make a presentation for the board early next year. Then I’ll be done.

I’m happy with how the project is turning out. I didn’t go into as much depth in rewriting the story as I first thought I might. Mostly, I just made the story more realistic by adding real names of places and people. I also filled some parts out with a little more backstory and detail. I removed a few things as well. It’s been good practice in editing.

I’ll also still need to write a new foreword and afterword.

I’m actually relieved to have not attempted to do a more in-depth rewrite of this story. It’s hard work to delve back into such dark and heart-wrenching memories of pain and abuse. So, I’ll finish this story and be done with it.

But then what? I’ll have a new version of my story that I’ve dubbed Cult Boy. What will become of this new version of the story?

I have two possible ideas.

  1. Try shopping the story out, reach out to agents and publishers.
  2. Just offer a free (or low cost) download from my website.

In either case, I’ll keep you updated. – dse
