Spaciousness

When I created this new website, I had to pick a theme template. I spent a couple of weeks trying to decide upon one. I went back and forth between eight or nine different themes, then I narrowed it down to three or four. Finally, I deliberated between two themes for several days. This theme won because it had a greater sense of spaciousness.

I used to call myself a minimalist, but it’s really spaciousness that I love. There’s something calming and beautiful about all things spacious. What I love about this theme is the spacious typography. It’s art in itself.

My love for the quality of spaciousness is also ever-present in my musical compositions. Much of Anderhill’s music is written using drones and sounds that create a sense of wide open space. That sound can create a relaxing and meditative quality.

Consider geography. Would you prefer to have the view of a crowded city, or would you prefer sweeping views of the ocean or prairie? Which would make you feel more at peace, at ease? For me it’s the spacious landscapes that come out on top. The same goes for a home. I’d much rather have four simple pieces of furniture in a room than a bunch of excess and clutter.

Spaciousness begets creativity. I find it harder to write and create if my surroundings are overly cluttered or closed in. A cluttered space makes for a cluttered mind.

One of my goals in becoming a better writer is to improve in the art of spaciousness: to write more meaning while using less words. – dse

On Music

This new site will include music from any one of my several musical personalities. Yes, I’m a bit of a musical schizophrenic. Although my main gig has always been as Dan (Steven) Erickson, the singer-songwriter, that has changed in the past few years.

Currently, I’m creating more experimental and electronic music than music from any other genre. Keep in mind, that could change any given day. Remember, I’m schizo. I might even develop a new musical personality.

I have two electronic music aliases. My main alias is Anderhill, but for my darkest electronic music, I go by A Cult of Lies.

I recently introduced you to Anderhill, and then I shared the first EP, The Beginning. If you take a gander at my music page, you’ll see that I’ve composed quite a few albums, EPs and long-play singles. You can click any of those titles to get to the Anderhill BandCamp page.

In the coming weeks and months, I’ll be chronologically posting short blurbs about each of my musical titles here. Each post will include a BandCamp music player for your listening pleasure. – dse

The Beginning

I introduced you to my alter-ego, Anderhill. It’s time that I introduce you to the music. Let’s go back to The Beginning.

The Beginning was my first recording under the name Anderhill. As a lifelong musician, I’ve studied and played a variety of musical styles and instruments, but I was primarily a guitar-slinging singer-songwriter until about four years ago.

I blame it on technology, but shortly after buying my first iPad, I started experimenting in recording music on the GarageBand app. Slowly, I began to move away from traditional songwriting and toward experimental electronic music. By late 2018, I was becoming so intrigued with electronic music that I decided to create a musical alias, Anderhill.

Anderhill has since become a wonderful journey in experimenting in a variety of electronic musical styles including ambient, drone, deep house, minimalism, and neo-classical. – dse

Anderhill

A couple of years ago, I started a website specifically designed to support my experimental electronic music compositions. That site included my discography, new releases, and stories about my work as Anderhill. I love the concept. However, the Anderhill was discontinued.

Why would I kill a good thing? Because sometimes that’s what creativity requires us to do. Start over.

The site you’re currently viewing has developed from years of creative changes, and instead of trying to maintain a handful of sites, I’ve decided to streamline. I wanted to build a site that represents the whole me. This is it.

It’s only fair to tell you from the start that music will have an equal part to words here. Expect to see news and updates about Anderhill music on a regular basis.

I’m not currently working on any new musical projects, but I am working toward adding a visual element to my creative output. I’ve made a rough goal to begin redesigning Anderhill cover art. Currently, all the album covers are all designed using stock photos. I’d like to begin using more of my own visuals to support Anderhill as I develop this new creative space. – dse

P.S. I’m no longer using stock photos.
