I grow tired of the Internet, social media, the endless emails, and constant advertising. It adds an element to life we never had to contend with in the past. It’s like an incessant mosquito that never stops buzzing around your ear. It makes me want to fade away. That’s why I’m slowly shrinking my online presence and activities.
Granted, to an extent, I’ve made my own choices regarding how involved I’ve become with all things Internet. However, in today’s socially isolated climate, we all seem to be getting forced to spend more time using the Internet. My job, my banking, and nearly everything I used to do in-person, by mail, or by phone is now done online. Over the coming months I’ll be letting go of more Internet excess. I’m going to be killing:
- andherhillmusic.com
- danerickson.net
- cowboyzen.net
- hipdiggs.com
I’m shrinking all of my personal websites to this single site.
But that’s not all. Recently, the platform Medium has built a paywall. If there’s two things that annoy me about websites, it’s incessant advertising and baiting. Sites that start out free and then suddenly switch to paid can go on without me.
I’ve already deleted accounts at LinkedIn, SnapChat, TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter in the last year. I did refresh Instagram and rejoin Twitter as Dan Steven Erickson, but I rarely use Instagram and I’m questioning if I want to stay on Twitter.
I’m going to delete a couple of email accounts. The incessant junk that slowly builds on email drives me crazy. Try as I might to unsubscribe, the junk keeps coming. It’s maddening.
I just want to teach, write, make music, and occasionally share what I do on online without being inundated with marketing. All the other busyness online just leads to disappointment and frustration. Stand by as I continue shrinking. – dse
